the 883 and the 1200 parts should be interchangable .. internals are diff frame is the same .. my suggestion .. anything but the stock oh my god that thing hurt my butt .. I poped for the mustang wide touring solo and it was worth every penny.
I'm real happy with my Sundowner seat. A lot of people say they don't like the looks of the Sundowner seat on a Sportster, I disagree. But to each his/her own, all I know is it is really comfy even after a 300 mile on day run.
I got this Crossbones spring seat on Ebay, it took a little bit of adapting, but it is really comfortable for me, and the springs take the pain out of a lot of bumps.
Good info, as I'm torn between the mustang and sundowner. So domapoi how do you feel about that sundowner. I know the passenger pillion part is 12.5" wide, as the mustang is only 10.5". That's the biggest part of my decision, the ole lady's comfort! I don't really care about looks as nothing is gonna flow with lines of my bike better than what I've already got on there, but it's just not that comfortable. New seat is in my future. My ole lady's dad has a mustang with driver back rest on his honda, yea I know honda, but he only rides for like an hour at a time then the bike is back home. Don't understand, it's got bags, highway pegs, windsheild, most comfortable seat for him and passenger.
I used to have complaints with the stock seat when I had a girl on the back. None of them have complained since I got the Sundowner. Same with my sons 06 883 Custom. The girls he rides like it too. I personally have not ridden on the back so I can't tell you first hand how it feels. I love the bucket seat effect that the front has to it though, and a lot softer than the stock one could ever dream of being. I'm kinda big to begin with so the stock one would just flatten out and was like riding on the bare metal frame on the bottom of it. Don't have that problem with the Sundowner. I guess it all boils down to whether you want a bucket stye seat or not too. The Sundowner puts you down an inch or 2 closer to the ground I believe too. And also I think an inch closer to the handlebars as well.
I got mine from a Harley dealer on ebay, they are usually a little cheaper than you can get from your local HD dealer. I asked my local HD dealer if they could/would match the one on line and they told me they couldn't. They say that if they sell it for less than what HD Corp. says to sell it for they can be fined. They said that they are sure that the dealers on ebay also get fined by HD Corp. but because they sell so much in volume on ebay they make more than they get fined. Not sure about that but you can still find it cheaper on line. And there are some other on ebay that are used but in really good condition as well. As a reference, HD local will sell it for $279.95 and seen them as low as $150 on ebay.
Also, make sure you get the right part number, 51739-07. If it lists a different number it is probably for the '04 to '06 Sportsters and supposedly doesn't have the needed room for the electronics that are under the seat on the '07 to '10 Sportsters. An '07 to '10 seat will fit an '04 to '06 but not vice-verse.
sundowner looks like a nice seat but i'm looking for a solo/pillion set up. looks like mustangs are nice and the add on wide rear seat looks good for passengers, thanks for the tips. I'm almost leaning towards a spring seat, looking into passenger seat options with that.
...An '07 to '10 seat will fit an '04 to '06 but not vice-verse.
Kinda, if you're talking about stock seats. The '04-'06 saddles have a pocket that accommodates the ICM which is located under the rider's butt. On '07-'09 Sportsters, the ECM is located in the rear fender. Those seats have the pocket in the seat pan positioned accordingly. The seats aren't bolt-on interchangeable from either direction. However, if you relocate the ICM on '04-'06 models, an '07 and up will fit. I've heard stories about people placing them next to the battery or lowering the ICM in the frame, but I've never tried it.
Aftermarket seats are a different ball game. Some have a pocket for both loctions, so one seat may fit '04 and up. Gas tank size is another variable to consider. Most saddles for the 3.3 glln tanks are longer than the 4.5 glln version.
Here's a recent thread that has some pics showing the difference in the seat pan for the different years: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...-the-same.html
