I wonder if you guys can help me....I bought a 2009 custom a few months back (my 1st bike). I'm having trouble maintaining a speed of around 30-40 without lurching the bike. I have taken advice and practiced slow speeds and am pretty good at it now. But it feels like my bike wants to go slow or over 50mph. It came with screaming eagle exhaust-can this be contributing? Thanks--Norma

You didn't say whether you have an 888 or 1200.
For "easy" around town riding, the Sporty motor is happiest between 2500 - 4000 RPM. Depending on which motor you have, use one of the charts below as a guideline to see what gear you should be in at a given speed to keep the RPM's in that range.
Also, how long (miles) has it been since the primary chain was adjusted?
I've heard some carb bikes can lurch due to drilling out the slide vent hole and chopping the spring, but an EFI bike should be pretty smooth. Has your ECM been "flashed" with an upgraded fuel map?
my 09 did THE VERY SAME THING, it came with some V&H slip on's, i thought it only had the slip on's, till i opened the airbox and seen a K&N, i then got a power vision and did a re-flash, never had the "surging" issue again.
