Assuming all mods are equal;
An 883 upgraded to 1200 but with the stock 883 gearing will typically beat a 1200 in the 1/8 mile, but the stock 1200 will reach higher top end speed and will win a longer race because of its higher gearing.
I ordered my NRHS 1250 kit the other day for my 883. Am keeping my 883 lower gearing cause acceleration more than high speed is what I enjoy.

Gonna be fun chewing up the asphalt with the extra power!

A factory 1200 conversion kit will convert an 883 to the same spec as a factory 1200, including gearing. After that they can both be tuned to the same degree and performance levels. Any other conversion, just changing cylinder bore, can with increased compression ratio and other tuning adjustments, be expected to give better performance than a stock 1200.

Our bikes are all geared high, to help meet noise regulations, so keeping 883 gearing is a great idea. That will give a converted bike the edge on acceleration, possibly better top speed too.

Back in the late 80's to mid 90's the standard screaming eagle 883/1200 conv was done with stock flat top 1200 pistons & you had a template to open up the combustion chamber to the desired cc's for a set comp ratio. They sell it under a stock 1200 rebuild kit now. I got 1 for wifes 01 for $200+ tax out the door with pistons, rings pins, & gskts. Had to buy the template seperate for $10. Now, this was the first 1 I've done & grinding on the heads was nerve racking & very labor intenseve but it payed of big time. I bought new valves while I was in there because i nicked 1 with die grinder. This bike has smaller vales than the 1200 & produces better port velocity than the bigger 1200 valves. While I was there we did a simple pocket port, nothing special but helps alot matching the seats to the port etc. Stock cams, cv carb with yost kit, stage 1 air cleaner from evo big twin I had laying around & a pair of crappy 1 3/4 drag pipes the Ol' Lady refuses to give up. No telling what this thing would do with a good 2 into 1 but she won't have it. Now I haven't put it on the dyno yet,but I have 93 FXR with a S&S 4 5/8 (89") stroker in it with too much to list, & this damn sporty runs like stink! Has no problem keeping up with mine & when I ride it it beats the crap out of 1200's & ALSO the 1's using dished pistons. When you do the simple but labor intensive head work it really unshrouds the vavles & I haven't been beat yet in stop light to stop light racing! Sorry about long post.
