Default Noob question

Hello everyone, this might sound like a stupid question, but here it goes. So I have been looking at the different Sportster models with the peanut tanks. I have a 2007 883XL I aquired about a year ago (first Harley) and noticed slight diferences in the fuel tank sizes. I was wondering if there is a diference or if it is just me.

If I am not mistaken your bike has a 3.3 gallon tank and many peanut tanks are 2.1

Different paint patterns can make them look slightly different, depending on model year or custom paint job, but as ib points out, there are indeed different sizes of what we call a 'peanut' tank, including custom tanks.

Yes the Sportster line has 3 different tanks. I also have the '07 and it has the 3.3gal peanut tank. The bikes like the 48 and 72 that have a 2.2gal peanut. Then there are the Superlow and Custom that have the 4.5gal "walnut" tank.

Thanks a lot guys, I am currently running with the 3.3 gal. peanut, but when I purchased the bike the guy had a 4 gal. tank brand new and unpainted still in the box that he gave me, no extra charge. I was thinking of painting and mounting to see what I like best. Any suggestions?

My opinion is it isn't a sportster without the peanut tank....Don't change it

Isn't it funny how people can see the same issue but arrive at different conclusions and solutions? I got the bike to ride it, not go gas station hopping. If ican't go for a couple of hours down the highway without having to stop for gas then the tank is too small. It is for that reason, therefore, that I love he 4.5 gallon tank on my 2007 1200 XLC.

Don't paint it until you have tried it on your bike. If you don't like it you can sell it on, otherwise you can let your imagination run riot when painting it!

The name 'Sportster' has become associated with all bikes having 'our' engine, although originally it was a variation the XLCH, and did indeed have the peanut tank as a distinguishing feature. But the other XL model had a larger 'proper' tank, plus bench seat. So these days we should be magnanimous and allow for both styles to coexist. Frankly I wouldn't thank anyone for giving me a peanut tank, for the same reason Roni spelled out.

I have been a 24/7/365 rider since 7/68. And back in the day I would never have considered a peanut tank for the same reasons as Roni. But a few years ago I got an 883l because it was blue and has a low seat. I am short. I couldn't ride much anyway because my mom was too ill to leave alone.

My mom passed a few months ago and now I have time to ride, but why bother? I can't really go anywhere. Las Vegas is almost like an island. Once outside city limits gas stations are few and far between.

It really depends on an individual's priorities, but to really 'ride' a larger tank would be a big advantadge IMO.
