+1 to a HD touring bike for extended rides.
Concerning your Sporty, it depends on how you use the bike. No need for an additional gear on my Sporty, as I ride it mainly on back roads.
HD added a 6th gear to their touring, softail and dynas around 2007. A 6th gear on my 2003 Ultra would be very nice to have, but I keep up with my buddies just fine on the highway ... and no problem stoplight to stoplight. No plans to replace my Ultra anytime soon or add additional gearing.
Ive round tripped sturgis many times with my sporty...3000 miles.....4300 to 4500 rpm's... U dont want that engine below 3 grand anyway....let her eat!
Baker makes 6 speeds for xl.s...$$$$$$....pretty straight forward to swap out..you can add teeth to the front or loose teeth in the rear to help...just keep the darn thing over 3g
