Default Carb help

So I just replaced my stock HD carb intake and noticed these two big threaded holes that once were used to hold it in:

I am wondering if I need any special kind of nut to screw in there or can it be a regular one? Or does it need them at all? I notice some air pressure coming out of them when I run the engine.

LouisB, those are your crankcase breather outlets. They are very important.

Do not plug them or you will damage your engine. You can purchase some hollow bolts with small screen filters, or accessory crankcase breather systems from jpcycles and vendors on this forum. I think DK, Hammer Performance, or NHRS all have breather systems.

Welcome, and please buy yourself a Factory Service Manual, read some posts here, and enjoy you Sportster.

when you change the air cleaner like that on a carb bike, don't you require a carb bracket of some kind?

Yes, the carbed bike need a support bracket, that is what holds the carb in place.

Here's a link to a support bracket and a link to some Breather systems.
