Default Carb Removal

Hey guys. I'm getting ready to remove my Mikuni carb on my Dyna for servicing. I have read that it's not necessary to remove the tank for this, contrary to what the manual states. I think I will remove the rear connection point though and pivot it up a bit. I've also read that it's easier to remove the enricher know from the left of the bike and leave it attached while removing the carb. Any comments on this? Same apparently goes for the throttle cable.

Anyways, my main question has to do with the attached pic. I am new to wrenching on Harleys and don't know what this cross piece. It connects the upper cylinders via banjo bolts and the carb mounts to a bar attached to this tube. Not sure if there is enough clearance yet to pull out the carb without removing that though. I can't seem to locate this part in the book.

Any ideas or tips?

Thanks

Don

The tubes are the engine breathers piped to carb..OR are hosed to the ground (being it's an aftermarket carb.)-pull them. There will be 2 seals per bolt.Bolt is hollowed.

Okay, thanks. Btw, this tube is not attached to the carb in any way. There is a hose that goes to the bottom of the bike, I assume this is a vent hose? The flat bar you see that also connects to those 2 bolts is where the breather backing connects.

I haven't been able to locate this "engine breather" in the manual. Anyone have any ideas what the proper torque should be when reinstalling?

Thanks

Don

The "breathers" are actually those two bolts screwing into the front and rear head, which are hollowed. This allows crankcase vapors to be routed (in your case the tubing and pieace of hose) to the atmosphere.Stock set-up the vapors are routed to the air cleaner base plate and sucked up through the carb. to be burnt.Think of it as a PCV system (which it is).As for torque,I just snug them up good-don't want to over tighten and crush the sealing washers.

That's a really good explanation. Thanks a lot. Makes sense now.

Got the carb pulled today. I did end up removing the tank, was just way easier.

Thanks for the help.

I ran my breather to a catch can with a filter instead of to the ground. A little cleaner and you don't take the chance of oil getting on you rear brake or tire from the hose routed to the ground.
