No, I didnt check the battery at the parts store any anything like that yet, we (me and my Dad) knew the battery needed changed out anyhow, but until then it hadnt just shut off like it did when we tried to start it, which made me wonder if there was something else going on. Being that I wanted/needed a new battery anyhow Im going to intall that first and see if that solves the problem and then go from there if it does not.
Temperature changes, big swings back and forth kill a battery. Here is Texas, car and motorcycle battery warrenties are a joke. It was 30-something last night, mid 80's today, another freeze coming this tomorrow night. That kind of temperature swing kills the battery.
Having said that, some last years and years, some crap out after one or two seasons.
As stated above, check your charging amperage to make sure you're getting a good charge, too little or too much can kill a battery quick.
But, if you had it charging on the trickle charger, it should not have died after a short ride like that. So, in my humble opinion, it is your battery.
Also, check the soldered connection on the ground wire to the frame. Late '90's and the '00 models had some issues where the negative wire to connector soldering would break giving intermittent juice.
Atom, when you get the new battery, pick up some High Dialectric grease and clean the terminals and connectors very well and coat it all with the grease, This keep air out of the connection and will do so for a long time. Clean the new terminals also they will already be oxidized some.
I had to install a new battery today. My 2009 FLHRC has 22,000 miles and this is the 3rd battery. 29 months on the original HD battery, 21 months on the replacement HD battery. I keep it on a charger when I am going to go more than a few days without riding. The culprit (according to the dealer) is the Florida heat. 2 batteries @ $ 170.00 per = $340.00 OUCH !!
