Default So Friggin Mad!!!!!!!!

I had a long ride to go on Saturday, so i decided to clean up my bike on Friday. Washed it just the same as I always do...never full blast from the hose, always just "misting" the water on everything. I dried everything off, and polished all the chrome parts. Saturday morning, I go out, pull the bike from the garage, start it up....now problem.....She stumbled a bit when I first started, but a few quick blips of the throttle seemed to help and everything leveled off and idled what seemed ok. My wife and I went to leave, and we got nothing but spits and sputters and backfires through the pipes.

I have a Power Vision, and the TP% stayed at 0 with only quick, sporadic jumps all over the dang place. I thought maybe water got into it or something, so I pulled it and cleaned it...nothing. Now, with the key on, bike not running, it would actually sweep normal, but only up to 72%. The TPS voltage at idle (running) was all over from .6 to 1.3 volts. I know thats not normal from what my diag manual says. Whats gettin me is key on, engine off, everything "seemed" normal. Key on, engine on, everything was all screwed up. I did all the tests that my manual said, check TPS reference voltage, TPS ground, and TPS output signal, ohm'd out all the connector wires going to the ECM, everything points to the TPS sensor being bad.

Anyone else had this happen? Its an 07' 1200 Custom. Thanks guys.

I always take my bike on a long ride after washing it to make sure everything gets heated up and dried out. Then just wipe it down good with a moist chamois.

Good luck, those newfangled electronic controls don't like water. I used to wash the engines in my trucks, but not any more.

Thanks John, I appreciate the input!! Im really wanting some insight to my issue, and wondering if it's just a coincidence that the TPS failed or WTF lol.

i will have the same type of a thing happen on my dyna and my wifes sporty, both are 2010s.. i have to agree with john on taking the bikes out after washing to get them hot and blown off... once they dry out them they do good, like before they got washed.. im real carefull to only get wet what im washing at the time when it comes to getting close to the electronics so i dont get water into them... hope this helps

The '07, '08 and '09 sportys are prone to problems from water getting into the fuse block and corroding the fuse holder blades and the relay bases. Do a search on CORROSION FUSE RELAY and you'll find quite a few others have had the same problem after the bike got wet. My '09 needed to have the fuse block cleaned too. You could also try swapping the relays from one position to the other.

Also, the stud where the negative ground goes into the case near the starter can get loose even though the nut clamping down on the cable is tight. That stud is just screwed into the case and vibration from the cable can work it loose enough to give you fits trying to find an intermittant problem.

I put dialectric grease on all the plugs and the fuse bases and anything else I think water might get into...
