Today I went for a ride and when I pulling out I notice the rear brake lever was hardly engaging the brake. I could press all the way down however the brake was doing next to nothing.
The front brake was normal.
After a few miles the rear brake was normal again.
You could be working out an air bubble. If there was air in the system it would compress funny and could do what you are describing. I would start by bleeding the brakes to find out if it is air or your fluid is dirty. If it is still happening then you may need to also clean your calipers which would involve having a more experienced (whether that is your or not) mechanic take apart and reassemble your caliper.
Thanks. I did have the brake fluid changed a few months ago when I purchased the bike. Can an air bubble occur after a few months? Or would it be noticeable immediately?
In addition to checking your fluid, the caliper may be dirty, so the pads can't move properly, or a piston has stuck in the caliper. You can demount the caliper, without disturbing the hydraulics, remove the pads and clean where the pads go yourself and check if the pistons move freely.
I would say that if you do take the calipers off yourself and move the pistons that sometimes it best to loosen up the resevior to allow the pistons to travel. Just be sure there is enough fluid in the resevoir to keep air from coming down when you push the pistons back in (torwards the pads).
Also if you start pushing the pistons around and it is really dirty inside the caliper and you start pushing those pistons back and forth you will still need to have the caliper taken apart cleaned, possibly rebuilt, and put back together.
