Question How do I remove cables?

I am trying to custom mount an aftermarket fairing to my Nightster. I need to re-route the cables in order to mount the fairing to the triple tree. How difficult is it to remove the cables from the handle bar and reattach them. I own the maintenance manual but its not completelyclear on how to do this.

The wiring to the handlebar controls have a connector that is under the tank. Pretty simple to take the tank of and disconnect them. As far as throttle/clutch/brake lines go just follow the manual.

Turn the adjusters all the way in and you should have enough slack to remove the cable ends from the carb/EFI bellcrank. Might be easier (and safer) to remove your tank, dents and scratches can ruin your day, and your pocketbook.

Thanks guys. I'm just trying to remove the cables from the handlebars so I can move them around and then reattach them when I get the fairing on.

Take the switch housing apart, the whole thing may slide off the end of your existing bars.

If you bike is EFI and you're going to take off the tank, make sure to pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the bike a little to get the fuel out of the fuel line before disconnecting it. The process is outlined in your manual in a section aptly named "Removing the fuel tank" or something of the sorts.

To get the throttle cables out of the housing pull them straight down with a lot of force. There are little C clips around the outer sheath that collapse when you pull them through the housing. I got one of mine to come out.............not the other. If the C clip is deformed in any way it doesnt want to come out. So I took mine off at the throttle body.........WAY easier.

My cables look to be screwed into the throttle housing, got some hex nuts on the adjuster tube into throttle housing. Make sure you have the pull out type before you pull on them.

I also agree, my FSM is completely missing any description about the cables except basic adjustment procedure. It does not even mention whether to lube the cables or not.

So I used some clamps I bought on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=171022003671) to relocate my turn signals to the forks. My plan is to eventually mount the aftermarket fairning to the clamps also but I still can't figure out how to move the throttle cables. I opened up the switch housing and messed with the adjustment on the cables. I panicked when I lost the tension in the hand grip but luckily I was able to get it back by adjusting the throttle cables again

Sometimes 'just trying' involves doing more than it might seem is necessary, to get the job done. Some of the cables disappear under the gas tank, including the handlebar wiring. Read through your service manual, where you will find drawings or photographs that will help you work out what is involved. Samantha the Witch could wiggle her nose and make things happen, but most things in life don't work like that, so you may well have to take that tank off.
