Hi everybody,
I tried searching my issue, but didn't find anything that really fit the bill...
I tried to start my 02 883C a couple of weeks ago. When I insert the key and turn it to ACC, the spedometer lights up and the mileage shows up on the display. When I turn it to IGN, the speedometer lights go out and no other lights come on or anything and there is nothing when I hit the start switch. Voltage is good before I put in the key and on ACC (right around 12V), but drops to 0 when I turn it to IGN. It sounds like the actual ignition switch to me, but I wanted to defer to smarter folks than me on the issue. Thanks.
My friend rides an 03 Electra glide and recently had a similar problem with his ignition switch. The shop said it was a common point of failure on that era Harley. It may or may not apply to Sportster.
Same issue here, hoping for an answer in my thread i just made. This is the only similar thing i have found here using the search feature. OP can you tell me if replacing your switch fixed this issue or not? Thanks
I sounds like the ignition switch as you have power to it but none to the ignition wire. If your battery is charged I would look to replace the switch. I'm sure if you google it you can find an aftermarket replacement. They shouldn't be that much.
There's 3 wires on the ignition switch, if you combine the two wires that turn on acc and ign, then the acc position will turn both on, just as if you were in the ign position, problem solved, ya?

I was curious about this myself when i seen a pic of my ignition switch. might have to try this here in a little bit.

It'll work. On a 2009 one wire is solid red, the other two are not.. combine the two that are not. I'd guess other years are the same, but I only know about the 2009.. regardless, on the back of the switch 2 wires are closer together than the 3rd, those are the 2 you'd combine.

thanks so much. getting ready to head to the bike in a few minutes. Out of curiosity, I was thinking this is the time to just switch it over to a toggle anyways. Couldn't i just pick up some type of two way toggle and wire it in?

That's what i did. I got a standard metal toggle switch, and then ordered a rubber boot that will screw down on top of it from a marine supply place to keep water out. There's a pic of it in your 'barrel keys' thread.
