We just got an '06 Sportster 1200 Custom with just 3,000 miles on it last week. First bike in over 10 years and I'm loving it!
It has the original seat on it, and that's not good for 2 of us. I'm seeing a lot of HD seats for sale, but don't know which models will fit mine. We're also going to have to get a backrest since the wife won't get on without one.
Any place I can go to see what other HD model seat will fit mine? Needs to be a double with some padding. The seat on this is killing my butt, but it's NOT stopping me from riding and smiling!
I'll post a picture of it soon....thanks for your input and help!
Many people are very happy with the Mustang Vintage seat. I personally think they are fugly but that means nothing since so many people love the seat. There are several Vintage styles, wide version, studded, not studded, etc. Also, they will raise you up higher compared to stock, which can be a problem for short people like me. I'm 5'-8" with a standard bike, I can't ride with a seat as high as the Vintage. Here's a pic of the seat:

i used this seat when i had my sporty...i didn't think it was ugly. it sure beat the sundowner that was on it!
i attached a pic for reference
edit: i bought the regular version for the rider and i bought the wide passenger pillion. sometimes passengers have hungry butts and i didnt want them to eat the seat.
You do not need to use a HD branded seat. You're much better off with an aftermarket seat. As the others have said, I have a Mustang seat. It really is the most comfortable seat for the majority of asses.
As a point of reference, the sleeker looking the seat, the less comfortable it will be for long rides. Also, the passenger must be comfortable. As the saying goes; "If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy".
I have a Sundowner on my '07. My kid (my usual riding partner) likes it better than the stock seat. I've never tried the other seats, so I can't speak to them in comparison to the Sundowner.
Mustang has a few different width seats. There is a one piece that has an 8in passenger seat, I have also seen a one piece that is 10 1/2-11in wide. Then they have 2 piece seats that have either 8 or 12in passenger seats. I am torn on which to go with. I have a sundowner now, so I probably need the wider one piece or the wider 2 piece. What size seats are you guys running, and who has happy ol ladies?
I went with the Mustang vintage (i believe its 12") and the passenger pillion ( 8 or 8 1/2" ) I have a removable (QR)sissy bar and rack. Pillion just fits in between sissy bar uprights. I love my seat and the wife is happy on the pillion.
Check the DK website for fitment.

I'm 6' 1" 165 lbs with a 32" waist. I have a Sundowner and honestly the seat was made for someone with more a$$ than I got. I'm currently looking into having MeanCityCycles modify it. My wife loves the passenger seat, but I'm not in love with it. I bet someone 200 to 220 would be right at home. It will raise you up quite a bit so if reach is a concern, you should steer clear.
