Default HD dealer negotiations on price.....

I am looking at a 2009 1200 sportster and at a 2013 brand new 1200 sportster. What is a good rule of thumb when talking price? Are they usually willing to budge on the sticker price? What kind of freebrees can you try to get? Thanks!

As far as the new one in the spring it's hard to get much off, at least get the 1000K service thrown in as it's pretty important to have the dealer do that one, over and above that if you can't get a cash discount at least try to get some freebees such as a factory service manual, helmet or some shinny bits.
The used one is anyones guess but there should be some room to move on the price as they don't usually allow much for a trade in value.
In either case beware of their financing and extended warranties, both are a huge profit center in modern dealerships, often grossing more profit than the actual sale of the bike. Shop a local credit union or your personal bank for the financing and remember the warranties are really insurance policies and are designed to make them money and the general rule of thumb is that they are a rip off.
Also deal in only "out the door" prices, a low price is often hiding huge fees for freight, prep, PDI and delivery.

Thanks for the advice. On the new one they were including a 3 year warranty program but it seemed steep. They are also going to give me a $400 gift card to the store for helmet, boots, gloves, etc.... I have gotten pre approved through a credit union for a loan which was MUCH less of an interest rate than Harley financing.

wait until the end of the month or a week or so before, walk into the dealership and get all grabby on a bike. after the salesmen comes over, shoot the s4!7 with him and then proceed with a credit check or flash some money. get him to agree to a low price... fain poverty and indecision, then leave.

wait for him/her to call. run through his/her pockets. whittle that price to a reasonable number near invoice. do be a jerk about it.

you'll see these guys a lot.

I would try to find a good used bike from someone. The dealer ed to add ler prep and shop fees on a used bike even after they quoted me a price. I walked out bought a bike from a car dealer who had taken the bike rade from his uncle. It only had 678 miles on it and was a straight up deal. The dealer called the next week ready to deal now.

I decided to go new and get the 2013 48. This is the deal I got, I hope it helps you figure it out:

(Note that I'm in CA so taxes are higher)

2013 Sportster 48 = $10,599 MSRP

Options:
Candy Apple Red tank = $300
White Wall Tires = $600 (installed)

OTD Total = $13,764 incld' taxes, licensing and dealer BS.

I bargained and GOT:
- the stock bike for $11,900
- red tank for $300
- WW Tires for $550 (installed)

Final OTD Total = $12,750

When I signed they then got me on GAP insurance for an additional $599....grrrr (I would ask to make sure its included in the deal). But at that point all the other dealers were trying to screw with me and I decided it was worth getting the bike from a dealer around the corner from where I live

HD financing tried to nail me with a ridiculous 9.9% APR - and my credit is pretty good. I declined till they got me a rate from a local Credit Union at 7.39% for 60 months. I could have even gotten a better one had I shopped around, but screw it - I wanted the bike NOW If you shop for the financing you can really save. Also, I ended up going with Progressive - MAJOR discounts with MSF School and being a Harley-HOG member.

Good Luck!!!!
