after riding with these for about 5 years, I am about to replace them. cost around $80. replacements were a bit more.
they pop on and off easily due to easy brackets. very much worth the cost- so my recommendation is that you skip leather. my old and new bags were "throw over" but I cut them apart and attached the easy brackets.
these are really big bags and they have handles. all around great additions to the sporty imo:

I like bags that really hug closely to the rear fender. I suppose thats more my issue then the size of the bag really. I want a bigger bag to store things in but they always stick out so far. What this on spring cut outs I read? Do those hug the bike better?

I have the Viking bags with the spring cutouts mounted on my 2010 Iron. I really like the look but the mounting was (and maybe still is) an issue. I don't know for sure the extent of the issue as I have never had more than a pound or two in them. I will be doing about 950 or 1000 miles this weekend so I will have a much better idea of any problems.

HD throw overs in my sig. Room for a leather jacket in each if you expand the straps. Handy for hardware store runs and consume gear on days when you go from cool to hot and back to cool during the ride. After wearing a backpack for years on my Ninja I won't give up saddle bags for style points. Ever.

I have the saddlebag brackets to keep them from flopping and hitting the shocks.

I'm thinking about getting a set of cheap throw over like these. http://www.jpcycles.com/product/831-250

As long as they hold my chaps and leather jacket, I'm good to go. I can get what clothes I need in my sissybar bag.

I have a pair of Boss Bags (www.bossbags.com). I added a pair of their removable bags. Yep, they're not cheap, but I commute on my bike everyday. So my saddlebags are constantly used. On a side note, they do hold up well. Some douche bag backed in to my bike and knocked it over a few years back. The only damage to the saddlebag was scuffed leather (there was other damage to the bike).
