Default Swapping mids/forwards (left footpeg stud issue)

I have mid controls on my 89 sportster. A week ago I ordered a set of CustomChrome forwards on ebay. Shortly after, a friend got an '86 with forwards and would rather have mids. We set out to swap controls, and all was going well until I got stuck figuring out what to do with the stud left behind that once held my left footpeg. It runs through the primary and there is a gasket around it on the inside (presumably on the non-threaded section). Below is the exploded view from my parts catalog. The kit I ordered came with a threaded cap to plug the hole left behind by removing the stud, but the instructions don't cover anything regarding removal of the stud itself. Also, the cap provided is threaded all the way down, and makes me wonder what I'm supposed to do with the gasket on the stud, since it clearly wont go on a threaded hex cap. I spoke to a HD tech who recommended I simply leave the stud there, and put an acorn cap over it. This would leave my friend without a stud for the footpeg. So, to anyone who has done it before, how do i get this stud out and how does this cap replace it effectively without a gasket?
