One thing few people touch on is changing the cam profiles to match the amount of performance you are seeking. Just bolting on "stuff" to supposedly let it breath better isn't going to do much good when the cams are the limiting factor. And, the cam changes are going to need to be accompanied by a higher rpm operating band.Of course one could carefully choose cams and matching intake and exhaust components to enhance midrange torque but since HP increases as a square of speed, higher rpm with lower overall gearing would provide some performance you could really feel.

You're right about the value of cams and headwork, but the whole reason "stage 1" modifications are so popular and important is the fact that today's bikes have been literally strangled (intake and exhaust) to meet the strict EPA regulations. Unless the motor is breathing properly, more advanced mods are pretty much a waste of money.
