Default Help on intake

Ok, I'm very new to motorcycling and this is my first time ever using a forum.
So I don't understand some of the lingo I've seen. Please forgive my ignorance, I'm a fast learner.

Down to the meat of my question. I have an Iron 2013. Still has the dealer header pipes and some "2.0 inch Baloney Cut slip Muffler Blk".
I hated the stock intake and bought a DK Customs HiFlow 587 kit. They say it needs no additional tuning. Is this correct?
I have noticed it runs great for the first hour or so then it will idle fine, but hesitates a bit in first and second gear if I really jump on the gas.
Called the local dealer and told me it's running "lean" and that I'm destroying my engine, and to get a dyno tune ASAP for 850$
Does this all sound right?
Wouldn't the check engine light come on with the o2 sensors doing what they are meant to do.
Could I tie a bandanna around the air filter to make it run "Rich" by that logic?
I want to get some Vance short shots soon. I will do a tune then.
Am I ok for now?
Hope I'm posting this right.

Buy some xied's for around 100 bucks if you don' want to get it tuned now Dk sells them and most thatrun them are happy with them. That will work with the short shots as well and buy you time if you want to do a little research on tuners.

Wow! Thanks for getting back to me.
I will google xied's
Still if it was running "lean or rich" shouldn't the check engine light come on.
Think I'm ok for two weeks riding it till it goes in?

Probably fine for two weeks, if all you are planning is exhaust and intake there are other options than paying for a Dyno and SERT. Also who is going to preform the Dyno? Just because someone has a dyno does not mean you will get a good tune. I could be wrong but from what I understand most/all dealer are also limited to epa friendly tunes. Like I said I could be wrong on this as I have no first hand experience with dealer tunes but I'm sure someone else will chime in as well. The bottom line is if you want to squeeze every last drop of power out the dyno is the way to go. If you want a well behaved stage one bike xied's are a very effective low cost solution.

I'm planing on having the dealer do it.
Guess I'm still wondering why the check engine light would not come on if it was really running lean.

I paid $375 for my Dyno in '08.

If you think you need more than a Xied screw the dyno scam and just put that money towards a good tuner.

No, the check engine light does NOT come on if it is running too lean.

All new Sportsters have that low RPM hesitation from the factory, whether with a stock filter or a hi-flow filter. It is to meet EPA requirements.

Click HERE for info on the XiED's. Most are happy with them, whether the bike is stock or has free flowing pipes and A/C.

If you want the absolute best tune, I don't think you can do better than a Power Vision tuner from Fuel-Moto...no dyno tuning needed.

Kevin,
I have bought the intake, spedo relocation and bar clamp from you guys. Love them all.
With the pipes I described above am I ok riding it? Or am I killing the engine like the dealer says?
Even after a tune will it still act the was I'm describing?
So it might note even be running "lean"?
How would I check if it was?

lono01;

1-Yes & no, you took a "lean" tune and made it "leaner" with the intake and slip-on's. Over time, could cause damage...unless you correct the lean condition.
2-No, properly tuned motor won't have hesitation, but Dyno isn't your only option. There's a vast array of "after-market" tuners available and all are MUCH CHEAPER than Dyno. Like to know if your dealership has a "gold-plated" Dyno b/c $850 bills is "extremely" overpriced.
3-No...sounds like you're experiencing the std lean condition from the a/c & pipes.
