When I bought my bike (08 Nightster) the PO said he did the V&H SS and SE AC him self and then had Harley tune it. I took it for a spin before I gave him the money and it road fine but after owning it for a month and half now I've noticed some popping when i left off the throttle. I looked under the seat and and the batter cover and there is no sign of a tuner. Do you guys think Harley just did a SE map tune on it and called it good or what? I've been thinking about doing XIED's but not sure what the outcome would be with whatever Harley did to the bike.
It probably just has the "harley download" You can go to the dealer and have them run your VIN and they can probably pull up what they originally did to it. If he had them tune it with a tuner he probably would have given it to you with the bike. (the reflash tuners don't stay attached)
The XIED's will work with the download and are a great product for 100 bucks but it will not tune your bike...just add a tad of fuel.
It all depends on 2 things when it comes to tuning:
1. how well do you want it to run?
2. How much are you willing to spend to get there?
the only other plan I have for the bike is a round AC from figure machine in place of the SE AC. I just want the bike to run proper and not blow the motor up from putting exhaust and AC on.
You ain't going to blow up the motor (as long as u keep oil in it) I used the XEID's until I had the money for a full tuner and then sold it for half price. Worth every penny of the 50 bucks and I used it for 6 months
All the HD stage 1 remap does is increase your rev limiter. It does not make your bike run any richer. I did a stage one and installed the X14iEDs and have never looked back. IMO a tuner is not needed unless you are going to go to a stage higher than a stage 1 like upgrading the cams or something OR you are planning on racing your bike professionally. If you go to DKCustoms.com (a vendor/sponsor on this site) or Nightrider.com (the makers of the iEDs) and read all about them. $100 new from either place (or as mentioned before, find some used for about half price) and well worth it vs a hell of a lot more for a good tuner.

the stage one map actually does something important, it adjusts your VE tables. The AFR is not changed so it is still EPA lean but it will be less lean and more accurate now that the bike is using VE tables closer to the actual volume of air moving through the engine with the stage 1 AC and pipes mod. Lots of people have had good success with the HD stage 1 download but it works best with SE components which is what it was tested and written with.
