So my 09 Nightster just went over 3K miles. My oil light came on while I was on the highway. I also smelled oil when I would get on it a few times on the highway but not all the time. When I got home. I checked the oil and it was low. Almost took a full quart. Anyone have any issues like this? My riding this weekend was mostly highway. During the week I ride to work when it's nice which is about 8 miles to and from work. Is this normal? Also before someone states "Use the search function" I did and to be honest. It sucks!
Do you recall the mileage that you last checked the oil level? Regardless, now that you know that it has sufficient oil, I'd just keep an eye on it every few hundred miles.
Your bike is new? 3K if new and your a quart low is not really a major concern yet. As the others have said, keep an eye on it. If it does it again say in less than a 1K miles, then Id let the dealer look at it. Sometimes a newer engine will use some oil while it get's broke in.
Harley says a quart every 1000 miles is acceptable. How many miles since you last added oil? i keep mine halfway on the dipstick and when it gets to the low level line i bring it back to halfway. I check it often though as these engines do go through some oil. some more than others it seems.
I know on my '04 1200C [that has almost 15,000 miles] that it uses a little. It's made two round trips to Sturgis, around 2600 miles, and it used about half a quart each time.

A quart every 1k miles??? WTH~ I always keep an eye on my fluids but aren't we in 2013???
I checked my oil on my 1200 custom the last weekend and i was down maybe half a qt?. Added some and the world was a happy place. I had my original service done somewhere between 1400 and 1600 miles and when i checked this past weekend it was around 5400 miles.
For the oil light to be popping on at 3k miles to me seems a touch excessive but my experience is pretty much limited to this one bike. It would definitely be enough to make me nervous.
