I'm in the same situation, 2005 XL 1200C, 8900 mi. Went to the dealer to see about trading for an 07' Street Bob and the highest they would go was $6,400. I ended up keeping it and buying a used 06' Bob for $5,000 less than new stock. Because of this, I may be able to keep both bikes. (no kids) I would like to sell the Sporty, but If I have to keep it....Oh well. The only thing better than a Harley in your garage is 2.
If you're really concerned that much about costs/money, do not even consider trading in or buying from a dealer. Sell the bike yourself and buy a used bike from an individual owner. When you dealer with a dealer you are only throwing money away.
I just finished having a similar conversation with 2 dealers regarding a similar scenario.
Dealer trade-in:
If you don't own it, expect to lose your shirt on a trade. You will, AT BEST, get trade-in value. Kelly BB lists your bike at $4790 trade. You can probably get that since the miles are under expected mileage of 24,200. You will get little to no additional money back for your accessories in a trade-in scenario. The best way to recoup your money is to strip the bike down to near stock, trade it and part out your accessories for cash. A fair estimate is 50% recoup for accessory investment.
Retail sale:
Kelly BB shows your bike at $7140. You could try to ask for higher if you include the accessories but this will likely be a crap shoot for you. You can find newer models for the same and in some cases less money. If you find the right person at the right time you will get what you want. But that could take time you might not be prepared to wait for. Most likely you will end up making a compromise on the price to get it sold. Just like the trade scenario, I'd suggest taking the bike to stock and then either offering the accessories in the sale to justify or jack up the sale price or include an offer to sell the bike at a reduced cost without including the accessories. If they sell for the higher amount, bonus. If you sell the bike for less but can part out the accessories for extra cash, bonus. Itâs win, win for a private sale assuming you can afford the time and patience.
Decide how much your time is worth to try to sell it yourself. Compare that to the difference between retail and trade value and pair that with your desire to get the new bike now versus later.
Of course there are differences everywhere you go and you could get more in specific scenarios. But a conservative, realistic expectation is that KBB is a good estimate for what to expect for the bike alone. I wouldnât expect to get anything for the added accessories, especially from a dealer trade, and anticipate selling them individually and even then, expect to only clear about 50% of the new retail value.
I have to agree with bensonjv here. New bikes are not that much more than what you will be asking for a used bike.Mods are usually worthless to the next buyer who willwant to personalize the bike for himselfso don't expect to get much extra with them installed. Pull them off and sell them separately for around 50-60% of what you paid for them new. A lot of used bike sellers are taking a hit nowadays as new bikesupply has caught up with demand and used bikeprices are coming back to reality. The days of getting your money out of your mods are gone and so are the days of less than $1000 depreciation on a bike a few yrs old. I expect to see even further drops in used bike values as more people realize the HD shortage is over.
The anniversary's are doing good on the prices I traded my 03 883C (silver/blk) bone stock except the SE pipes for 5500 bucks back in September and I had 2 dealers offer me the same price on the bike sight unseen and yes the blue is a VERY rare color
Just paid 7800 for a 1200R with 1476 miles and warranty until 5/08. It was a tradein and dealer told me the previous owner lost his a** trading it. I figured a basically new 1200 for little more than an 883 wasnt too bad. Now if it would only quit snowing. You have a nice machine but they will probably nail you on a trade too.
You can try to list it on ebay....it will sell fast if you are willing to sell at afair price (not top dollar). You are going to have the same problem I have. There are so many people that buy HD bikes and never ride them, then sell them. For the people that ride 5-10K+ miles a year, you will end up selling against bikes that have 1-2K miles and are the same year as what you are selling. Many people will give the low miles bike a higher bid. We know that HD motors last a very long time and will go over 100Kmiles, but a lot of buyers dontknow this. I would list the bike on ebay, set a reserve for the lowest you can sell for and wait. If no buyers, relist and try again...you will find someone that will give you a fair price in the end.
You can search the completed sales as well...looks like the people that have sold a2003, 1200,got around $6000 for theirs.
Ideally I would love to keep it, pay for the bagger and then start bobbing the Sporty. I've seen a few here and I know I can catch that ball and run a touchdown lookswise. It would eliminate taking a passenger and that can't happen so I'm either going to miss out on a nice well maintained 03 RK or give up the Sporty. The lottery ain't helpin at all.
