Hello all, just out browsing the net and came across the site. I bought my first ever bike in the summer of 2005. Of course, it was a Harley Sportster 1200Custom and I have loved evry minute of it. I finally took the first steps to customizing my bike and have already ran into some headaches and was wondering if some fellow Harley owner/Riders could help me. I know this is the new members area but maybe I can be pointed in the right direction. So as I said before, I took my first baby sets and decided to upgrade my exhaust. Yeah, I am one of those who wants a little louder system. Anyways, this is right where I came into my first problem. I ordered 1 3/4" Santee drag pipes from Custom Chrome. Of course they came with no directions but I managed to get them on. Then I go out for a ride and everything sounds great but now I have run into some problems and any technical support or advise would be great. My bike now cuts out on me, I loose all battery power and my choke won't pull out. someone please help. I know I will probaly have to take it into a service center but I just want to know if I did anything wrong or what's up. Thanks for any assitance and I promise I didn't join the forum just to get advice. This was my first post but it won't be my last...Thanks in advance.
I can't think of anything that changing your exhaust would have to do with battery or choke problems. Carb, maybe but highly unlikley it would cut out like you describe. Surely (don't call me shirley haha sorry) you didn't disconnect the batt. cables but you may just check em, a bad ground can cause some chaos. The choke or enrichener which ever your prefer should be all mechanical look for obstructions keeping it from pulling out, take off the air cleaner look into the "throat" and see if there is some mysterious object around there, hope not. I really don't know what to tell you since I just don't get how and exhaust change could affect these things. Maybe someone could enlighten me. Good Luck, Joey
Try to loosen the little black plastic nut there behind the choke ****. I can't imagine how installing pipes would screw up the choke, but see if somehow that tensionnut has gotten too tight.
