Para,

I must be the odd duck after doing some more research. Everything out there says that I should be ok running the current setup (587 AC, Cycle Shacks, and XIEDs) but my engine tells a different story.

Other than the heat issue, I absolutely love the combination. So, just for kicks I took off the AC this weekend, reinstalled it, lock-tighted the fittings (again) and cranked them down. I also checked my exhaust headers, snugged up those fittings, checked my crossover tube, and the slip-on / header joint. Now that I am 100% sure everything is fitted correctly, we will see what happens.

Could the excess heat possible be due to my altitude (Denver 5,000 ft+)?

Also, I'd reiterate that the heat issue was when I was sitting essentially dead still for 30-45 minutes after cruising at 70mph for 20 minutes or so. Getting off the highway the bike was definitely warm, but sitting in traffic at basically a stand-still made the bike get really hot. Go figure.

I changed my oil this weekend so we'll see if that helps at all (can't hurt).

I think DK is right on this one, there must be some other variable that is throwing my system out of whack--since there are so many other people running the same systems without an issue. Any suggestions are welcomed, by the way.

Truth be told, looking back at my research, I'd still do it all over again. I think you'll be fine. Apparently I just have a finicky little sportster

I ordered the PCV this weekend, so we'll see what happens with that. I like the AC and pipes too much to go back to stock!

I got the Vied & breather bolts from DKCustoms & made my own Air Cleaner from parts ordered on line(other co's) 5 1/2" dia 2" thick 360 air flow chrome cover & mounting bracket. I installed the Vied 1st set at directions sent, ran 1 week, noticed big drop in operating temps & better performance. No longer burning leg on stock air cleaner. Next week installed breather bolts & fabed air cleaner & installed. Ran last 4 days now. lower temps all around, better, smoother performance, better sound, couldn't be happier. Cost me $120= for Vied & $100= for breather bolts & mounting bracket & air cleaner parts.RUNS COLDER & NO SMOKING! PS sitting in traffic at a stand still for 30-45 mins would overheat any FI Harley bike unless you buy the new twin cool model. The guy that had smoke or oil spitting probably over filled the oil tank. The only reason I didn't buy a complete air cleaner from DKCustoms is I didn't have that much money to spend, if I did I would've.

The XiEDs do not affect decelleration conditions such as popping, because they only affect the bike in closed loop mode. Off throttle decel A/F is determined by the stock map.

If you go back to your stock AC, keep the XIEDS, they are still helping your bike run more rich when its in closed loop.

Also, thank you guys for your shared experiences about this kit, I'm set on buying and installing it as soon as I have the coin. Worst case scenario is that I love the kit but run a bit lean, in which case I'll make a run up to Milwaukee and have the guys at Fuel Moto tune the hell out of my Iron.

Cool. Yeah, I direct at least a dozen people a month to the post you did on how to do a wire tuck! Great stuff!

The clear covers on the DK Outlaws do not get cloudy on the inside because our systems do not route the hot oily air into the air cleaner. There are several other companies that make clear cover models AND route that nasty air into the air cleaner...they get pretty grungy on the inside.

The gasoline vapors only do not cloud up the inside.

It might be as simple as sitting essentially dead still for 30-45 minutes.

I was on a group ride last week...we got in some traffic in a few spots and I noticed that many guys shut their bikes down, even if it was only for a couple of minutes at traffic lights.

Myself, I'll shut the bike off if I know it is going to be 3-4 minutes or longer, like at a RR crossing.

These bikes are air cooled ( and a little bit oil cooled), so if there is no air flowing across it really should not be running.

If you haven't got the PCV yet, it might be worth it to spend a bit more and get a Power Vision...they are so much better than the PCV that they are not even in the same ballpark.

Here's the link to the Ride Report from last week...might find it interesting.

When I was on my Yamaha Warrior (an air cooled, pushrod v-twin @107 cu-in) I got stuck in a bad traffic jam outside of Nashville TN. Ironically, a beer truck had caught fire (the tractor caught fire, not the trailer) and the whole highway was a disaster.

Initially, I figured that I'd just keep the bike running and wait it out, but my bike (a very modern metric with all the latest technology) got VERY VERY hot and I had to shut it off when it started pinging. I couldn't cut ahead via the shoulder because the EMS people were using the shoulder, so I was really stuck there.

It was about 25-35 minutes of sitting in ONE spot after we had all come to a sudden halt from highway speeds before it started to ping.

So yeah, I'm inclined to think that W1ldcat's problem was probably the environment and not the tune. There is only so much that you can do with an air cooled engine that has no air flowing over it. It would be like shutting off the water pump on a liquid cooled bike and letting it run.
