Might be stupid question but thought I will give it a try. Helped a buddy change rear head gasket on his 2007 1200 sportster. Everything went good except now there is a excessive tapping (almost a knock) in the rocker box. What did we miss? Took it back apart and everything looks ok.

Did you let the lifters pump back up, or possibly switch the push rods? The push rods are different.

Thanks for the reply..... Put push rods back in correct tubes.... How do you prime lifters? We poured oil in lifter tubes and run engine for a few minutes. What is the proper way to prime them?

Is it possible that the top rocker box cover got turned 180? I have the three piece boxes, I think yours is a two piece, but maybe it can go in reversed, I'm not really sure.

I have read something about letting the lifters bleed down, but I would think if you had the head off for any appreciable time, all lingering oil pressure would be gone. Who knows.

you just let them sit until you can turn the push rod with your fingers, that what my service manual says. takes about 30 minutes. If that doesn't fix it I would double check installation.

Glad you got it fixed, the lifter probably just had to bleed down.
