So last night while out the bike started but the engine light stayed on for a few minutes then the bike died. I waited a few and tried again. The bike started no warning lights are on, and I ride it home.
This morning the bike wouldn't start. I had it in neutral, and it would just click. Can't remember if the engine turned over or not. Put it into 1st and tried to start again. Engaged the clutch, and the bike lurches as I depress the start button. So what does this sound like it could be? A simple clutch cable adjustment or is the clutch possibly gone.
I also forgot to mention that when it first started last night it was not an easy start. I.E. it took a few seconds of holding the start button down before it caught. Normally it does it right away.
This doesn't sound clutch related at all. Sounds more like you have a bad battery or your charging system is failing to charge the battery while you ride. The click noise when starting is the starter solenoid connecting, but without enough power from the battery it won't crank the starter over.
What about the bike lurching when I start it in gear, and have the clutch depressed?
A little movement when starting in gear, especially when cold, is not unusual.
However, too much lurching (everyones perspective of lurching could be different) & it could be too much fluid in the primary, or clutch needs adjustment, or the clutch cable needs adjusting.
None of that matters terribly if the engine won't run or stay running.
Like Scuba said, first thing I would check is good connections on the battery cables, both ends.
Well you guys were right. It was battery/charging systems related. Bad battery and system relay. Parts were reasonable, but diagnosing the problem ouch. Either way I felt a little giddy riding the bike back home at rush hour.
