i bought a windsheild for an 883 l . my question is the wind hits me in the face.i have it as high as it will adjust would lowering it give more wind or change the direction
Which windshield did u buy? How many inches from the headlight opening to the top of the screen? Most helmet buffeting comes from UNDER the w/shield rather than over it.
The wind you're feeling may also be coming up over the top of the tank. Many guys have gotten rid of buffeting by using a tank lift. The change in position of the tank forces more air over the engine, and less air over the top of the tank.
i'm not sure the size but i'm thinking it is not the touring windsheild. if i wear my 1/2 helmet with the visor the air catches the visor and can feel it pulling up on the chin strap.must be two or three inches between headlite and windsheild are you suggesting lowering to as close to the bottom as i can.
what started me thinking is the big boys have shorts on the batwings and it seems to work for them
I just bought a windshield from my HD dealer and was told the ideal height is where the top of the windshield is level with the tip of your nose. That’s what I went with and it seems to be working fine while wearing my half helmet. It makes riding in the cool fall weather more comfortable but it sure is a bug magnet.
Yeah man, you will have to play with it a lot (height, position), and the one you bought might not even be the right size/height for you.
If you don't get it just right, IMVHO, they can make the wind worse because they can create very turbulent air which will beat your head back and forth like a bobblehead.
These days, I stick to very small minifairings that break the wind off of my chest (to avoid the chest-as-parachute problem) but I prefer my head to be up in the totally undisturbed air, its smoother and quieter in my FF helmet.
thanks guys . i will mess with it tomorrow after work going on a long ride on sat we will test some things out . may take a few tools along.thanks again
Here's a piece of art from the Memphis Shades installation sheet... maybe this will help with your adjustments...
Wind buffeting has been a PIA ever since I put on my windshield. Went by HD recommendations and I think I would have been better off with a one inch higher windshield.
Was not aware or told by HD that I could adjust the angle of the windshield to help divert more wind over my helmet. Just checked my ride and this is something I will be trying tomorrow ASAP to see if it helps.
Many thanks for the info!!
Going to break it down. There is no such thing as no helmet buffeting with a windshield on a Harley Davidson, namely Sportster. Wearing a FF helmet like I do makes it miserable to ride with a windshield. The airflow comes from below up along the tank, air cleaner and its you right under your FF helmet making your head shake in the dirty air vacuum. Wind conditions affect this drastically.
None of the metrics I owned had buffeting let alone chest blast air flow issues when riding without a shield. Without a helmet buffeting is not bad at all with a windshield. I use a MS aftermarket plastic on HD QD hardware. I refuse to ride without a helmet so that's not an option.
At 65mph with calm winds I feel no chest pressure at all. At that speed with 20 to 30mph head winds I got to sit up and hold on a bit more. Bottom line is HD's have the worst airflow design on the market but that doesn't keep us that love them from riding them.
