Ive decided im gonna fit some 10" apes on my iron after riding a softail in arizona/nevada for 300+ miles in one day and found the higher handlebars were great on my arms! Plus love the look, I saw a 48 yesterday with 12" bars and thought bit big so defo going with 10".
Anyway can anyone give me any advice on the install, from what I can gather with 10" apes the clutch and throttle cables will be ok? Some say the wiring will stretch but if its gonna be tight then I will get some wire extensions fitted? Im not keen on bending brake line to fit so will change to a braided, any advice on length? Ive seen 38", 42"48", 50" etc. If I choose to run the wires internal is that difficult? Also is it an ok job to cut and solder the wires, dont know of I should attempt myself or an indy I know quoted 100 quid ($150) to do which os pretty reasonable? I was at my stealer yesterday and they want Ł675 ($1150) to do job and there work is *****! The 12" on the 48 was done by them and next to speedo was black tape then bare wires then original heat shrink from the join and looked crap!
Any advice would be great cheers and especially any on if the wires will fit with 10" bars? Cheers
I had 10" mini apes installed on my 883L and the local shop changed out the brake and clutch lines to longer ones. I'm not quite so certain the stock wires will work but then again, I paid to have them installed.
I've got the same bars on my RG with internal wiring and it didn't look like an easy job.
Clutch and throttle cables will work. Brake line has to be replaced. Use a 42-43" that will be perfect. It's not difficult to wire internally just take your time doing it, don't stress it. Just finished my 14" bars the other day with no complications. With 10" apes you won't need much extra wire length. I'd say 5" tops.
Btw cutting and soldering will work just fine! That is if you know how to...
I just did 10" apes on the wife's 08 883L. Only had to replace the brake line with a 43". I did not do internal wiring but the job took less then 3 hours.
Well ive ordered the bars, gone with some black 10" bars from santee as stupid cheap I thoight the stock brake line is 42" so I was thinking about ordering 48"? Could be different between a low and an iron??
