Are they the large fin style or the small fin? I believe I've read that if you use the large fins on the earlier bikes, you may have to grind away some fin material in some instances.

The opposite. A big fin 04-up style XL cylinder will drop right on to an 86-03 bike. However, a small fin 86-03 style cylinder requires some grinding on the lower fin on the pushrod side to clear the pushrod tube bases on a rubber mount. Even though the fins are bigger on the new cylinders, right in that area they're smaller.

Large fin or small fin. Model year does not make difference, as long everthing bolts on, a 883C LOWER
