i am going to change my derby cover on my 2013 Sportster 48, i bought the derby cover and it didnt say it required a new gasket but i see other bikes do. i have looked all over online to see if i could find a gasket for the bike but nothing has turned up. Do i even need a gasket for the derby cover or no? even the instructions for the cover dont show a gasket.
any help?
You need a gasket but if you didn't get a new one with the derby cover then just re-use the existing one. If it leaks which it probably won't then replace it.
Btw when I bought my wrinkle black HD cover there was a gasket supplied.

My 2007 Sportster had no gasket. When I did my first primary/tranny oil change I just replaced the rubber o-ring inside the cover. No gasket, no leaks.
yes! you do need a gasket!
and no, you don't need a new one...my uncle and i swapped our derby covers, i had an aluminum one and he had a chrome one and we swapped because he got a "big one" derby cover.
you will be fine
well not really a gasket but an O-ring...but i consider it as a gasket
But make sure when you replace you derby cover to take a dab of oil on your finger and just run it along the outside of the 0-ring (the side where the derby cover meets with it) to ensure a nice seal

There is a difference between a gasket and an o-ring...as I stated, you have an o-ring not a gasket...and as I stated, you can reuse it...so not sure where I was wrong since I use the correct terminology?
Never mind...just forget...we agree that you need a gasket/o-ring and that it doesn't need to be replaced but can be reused and as you noted, put some oil on it when reusing.
