Default re-installing shift lever problems

well i just put on my chrome primary cover trim the other day and went to go put my left side controls back on and something is not right. first of all, i can't get the damn thing in neutral. when i did at one point in time, neutral was nowhere near where it should have been according to my shift lever position. any suggestions on how to get me back on the right track? i tried messin with the lever's postion before i bolt it back into the primary but like i said i cant even find neutral now.

Retrace your removal and replacement procedures. Sounds like you may be out of sequence on the gears. Probably have to go up into 5th. and bring them down in order. Take the cover off and try this manually. If it makes no difference, you need a transmission man.

Put the lever on, There should be a small flat spline that lines up . Sit on the bike and roll it back and forth while down shifting . If I understand corectly all you did was put a cover on? did you remove the shifter assembly ? Mark...

yeah all i did was put the coer on, but i had to take the shift lever, well the whole left side controls, off. For whatever reason the gears changed on me when i put the lever back on. I'll try the rockin thing though....

The shift lever and the shaft have splines, very fine splines, try moving one spline at a time until you get it in what you feel is the right position. Sounds like Clutch adjustment to me though.

Take the shift lever off. Carefully, with a pair of pliers, take the shaft all the way down to 1st gear(don't strip the spline with the pliers). It sounds like the shaft is not in line with the gears you are selectingwith the lever. Once you are down all the way and, are sure that you are in first gear, put your lever back on and try the sequence again. You may have to change the lever several times to get it in the right spline/groove location.
