If it's clunking while slowing down when down shifting it means that you are kicking down before your transmission is ready. Wait until you are at a slower speed to down shift and see if it still does it.

Harley's will make a 'cluck' sound if you are using ducky lube, but normally they make a 'clunk' sound.

That clunk is the sound of determination. That trans is a very solid unit that will not fail you. Some call it "agricultural"...more like a tractor. I miss the clunk when I ride my wife's Ducati or Triumph. I rode Hondas for years long ago...once you get used to the clunk you will come to love it and its reassurance that you are where you want to be.

Thanks everyone for the assurance. I've had my fluids changed once. I'm coming up on 3000 miles soon. I just wasn't sure if something hadn't worn in properly or not while I was doing the "break in". I'm glad to hear this is a normal thing. I'll stay on top of my maintenance. I plan on keeping this bike until I kick the bucket!
