I bought my first Harley last November (2014 Iron 883). I've ridden a few Honda cruisers, but this is my first Harley as well as my first brand new bike. Well, I was wondering about the noticeable "clunck" sound my bike makes when I shift gears. My Hondas in the past made a sound when I switched gears, but the Harley is LOUD! There's definitely no second guessing if it's in gear or not. Is this normal?
It is normal, ive had my iron for 2 years now and still cant get used to it lol
Do a Google search and you'll see its a very common question as well as the engine rattle sound which again I still cant get used too but both are normal.
as long as you dont hear it grinding, youre good. I use to have an Yamaha XS11 that had a very vague transmission, so hearing and feeling that 'clunk' was very reassuring for me.
Thanks guys! It just really sounds off if I'm at a stop light in Neutral and kick it into first. Then I can hear each "clunk" as I shift up or down (even on the highway)! I guess I'll have to get used to it. At least I'm absolutely positive its definitely in gear! There's no second guessing!
Again like the others, it's normal. Im on my second new Harley and both have done it. I have found however that when you do your oil change, switch out your transmission/primary (one in the same with the Sportser) start using a high quality synthetic oil. At 1,000 miles I switched to synthetic 75-140 and it did quiet it down some. Just this week I did my 5,000 mile service and even though Harley says the transmission will go 20,000 miles I changed it out again. I feel this has kept the "clunk" you hear quieter.
Once you get used to the quirks and noises of the Harley, I think you will find it quit a reliable machine. I can't stress routine maintenance enough. Use high quality fluids. And you will find several people with very high mileage on their original motors.
Enjoy your Sportster, I miss mine and wish I'd never traded it in. You will find several people on this forum that feel the same.
The clunk you here is because the engagement of the gears, is no more then hard postive engagement.
Look at the picture and you will see the dogs that are a square cut boss
