'Need some specifics!

Do the front marker lights work? Have you done a wire tuck/tank lift? No fuses have blown?

If everything else works and JUST the taillights don't then you have to locate and inspect the wire that operates the marker light circuit, starting from the factory connector under the seat. Trace this back to each taillight and look for signs of chaffing and grounding out. Especially look at where the wiring for the lights runs alongside the inside of the rear fender...there are plastic tabs along each side that hold each respective side in place, and if these were to snap or break off the wiring is sure to make contact with the tire causing damage.

Lastly inspect each bulb's elements to make sure they're intact, and that you've installed them correctly. That might seem like an impossibility, but I've seen correct & incorrect bulbs forced into both the correct and incorrect sockets resulting in similar events.

Hope you find the culprit!

"also when I put new bulb in,it did not go on until lense cap was replaced,I thought that was rather odd"

Hmmmmmm...the "snapping in" of the lens cover may have jolted some loose wiring into making good contact. 'Sounds like you need to inspect each rear socket and it's associated wiring for either a broken tab or wire[s].
