What everyone else said. Just upshift later and downshift before giving extra throttle to accelerate.

Took me about a month of riding my Nightster before I had it all down.

Ok, but what if if you do the shifting at those rpms and it still happens?

There is a thread on top of this right now about "clacking". Maybe this is the same thing.
Could it be a need for tuning? running too rich? Could, for example, a loose primary chain do this?

That has to be another Owner's Manual misprint. I don't have an 06 OM, but OM's from both earlier and later years, call for the shift point to be 10mph higher and that is still very conservative.

BTW, you'll also find your manual implies that 3.6 quarts of oil are needed for an engine oil change. That's also incorrect, as the change requires ~2.75 quarts, the 3.6 quart spec is for a new dry motor.

I don't think any of that really applies to this bike. The only mod is the XIEDs and it only has ~1,000 miles on it. Could need new plugs because it sat so long.

But...that's for this bike only.

I don't go by those shift points. I just go by feel. They do seem rather low to me.

Whether or not mods were made to the bike (unless the gearing was changed) really has nothing to do with shifting early and lugging the motor.

There's also nothing in the OP to indicate the motor is misfiring or showing symptoms that would indicate he needs to replace 1,000 mile plugs.

My reply was to oddjack. You snuck in there on me while I was typing it up.

Thanks for your inputs guys. I know it's hard to diagnose w/o actually riding the bike.

I did some search and reading on this forum. I found this " pulsing" thing even when you are cruising and not accelerating. That's kinda closer to what happens when I am riding.

Seems like a loose chain, or bad tune, could do this. I am going to tighten up the chain a little bit and see if anything changes. I then probably ask a experienced rider to test ride it and see what they say.

A stretched chain will definitely give you a chugging sensation when cruising in 3 or 4. If there are big uneven stretch spots, buy a new chain ASAP. RK X ring chains on Amazon are a great deal.
