I like to gamble...
New to the sporty, been on a dyna for the last five years or so, finally getting close to having her done and posting pictures on the other side, but bought a sportster to fill in the gaps. I love my sporty, and I'm psyched to learn about working on it. It's a 1997 XL Custom.
I've already started tearing it apart, I bought a chain conversion kit, and I'm hoping to build a dual sport (more or less). I always have my eyes open for parts, and so far I've been lucky. I already have a plan (again, more or less) for the suspension, etc, but I don't know much about this engine. I'm inclined to start with the cams, and work my way up. However, grabbing these heads has me wondering.
What other parts should I or do I need to get to make them work. Will the covers still fit? From what I understand they are essentially the same heads that are on a newer sportster, but I looked online at them and these are set up to receive a carb, so that is an advantage? I assume I will need high compression pistons, and new rings, but don't see much point in new jugs just to go to 1250... (I doubt the take off jugs and heads from the dyna will go on).
I bought a 52 tooth for the rear wheel and a 24 T sprocket for the tranny, so maybe I can skip the cams for now, since I will be getting more low end torque from the gearing. If you're a hater, forget it, I never ever go above 85 mph, so I don't care about high speeds.
So I might be able to get what I need from the top end only? Just my guess. Looking for honest opinions from people who have done something similar. I'm used to searching these forums, and got enough info on the dyna side to rebuild my motor myself perfectly from write ups I found there. I've been searching to see if anyone in the sportster section has done what I'm thinking of, and been unable. So maybe someone can just direct me to a write up over here? Anyway, I look forward to hearing from the sporty crowd!
Peace!
