Rear wheel technical questions...
I'm turning my new sportster into a dual sportster for traveling and because it is a fun project. I am definitely putting a pair of Continental TKC80's on the bike.
I bought a used 40 spoke 16" rear rim on ebay cheap, and a 17 X 3.5" rim (off a triumph scrambler), not so cheap. I also have a brand new continental TKC80 130/80 17.
The hub I have is polished and not chromed, so I"m going to leave it alone. The rim is going for powder and getting painted black or that gold color of ohlins shocks. I was thinking that Stainless Spokes for this application would be best, but I'm really not sure. In terms of aesthetics, I am open to suggestions here, but durability and low maintenance is what's important.
I was also thinking of using fat spokes because they might be stronger? As I search for 17" spokes, it looks like they cost a fortune for anything fat, because I can only find them on the custom wheel sites, and I imagine there is some markup? I know SS isn't cheap, I buy it all the time for my restaurant. Maybe there is another material, or in terms of strength there is no difference.
The point is, I don't really know anything about spokes. If I find a set of regular SS spokes 17", can I just order them and put them on (thanks youtube)... Or are they designed to go only on a particular hub and rim combination.
I know it's a lot, but if you have the time?
Peace

Should I just buy longer spokes and grind them down if they stick through?
Anyway, maybe this calculator can help someone help me.
