I have a '00 1200 XLC with forward controls. I've had the bike for about 10 years and I've never been quite comfortable with the foot placement. Seeing how I'm about 5'8", it puts a lot of strain on my quads/thighs as it's not a very natural position to be riding in.
a) is it possible to go from forward to mid controls?
I'm a software engineer who has next to zero mechanical abilities/experience. I ride, but don't mod my own bike.
b) what is the difficulty factor in making this change if it is at all possible?
b) with a little bit of mechanical abilities you make the changes, but if you don't feel comfortable doing it there is many small motorcycle repair shops that can do it probably cheaper then a Harley Dealer
You will need to buy the mid controls unless you have the ones that came stock with the bike. Check craigslist so you wont be paying Dealer prices, lots of people sell their mids really cheap
I switched mine... Different mechanisms on an older model but it was straightforward and only a matter of taking bolts out and putting them back. I had to remove my exhaust... That was the hardest part because of the placement of the nuts
