Default dyno tuned screwed again?

Appreciate the quick reply and advice. You're a good dude. If stock hp is 70, then the results aren't bad. But if you look online, dyno runs from various sources (fuelmoto, cyclevisions) say stock hp is 70, 76, etc. I'm going to give it another tank of gas to see how the mileage goes. Again, thanks much.

I agree that the numbers seam low, but nothing in the sheet stands out as it being way off, at least on the wide open throttle aspect of the tune. A dyno print out only shows what the bike is doing at wide open throttle, and the air fuel line is only showing what 1 of the cylinders is doing at wide open.

if stock is 70hp and you done pipes and an air cleaner, you have picked up 10HP

you doing very well just from pipes and air cleaner, how much more you feel you should get from the changes?

Do you know what gear it was pulled in?

A little history: I live in the Cleveland OH area. I had a 2008 SG with SERT, Rinehart mufflers, SE air filter. Had it dyno-tuned by Liberty HD in Akron where it was purchased, since out of business, and it was terrible. Fuel mileage sucked, decel popping continued, not great throttle response. 4 hours of supposed "dyno tuning" and countless $$$, it ran lousy. It drove to find the forum here.

Here I learned from Doc to try Zepka HD in Johnstown, PA, 4 hours away mind you, and ask for Brian Beckley. Took the trip there and Brian dialed it in perfectly. On freeway ride home, that bike average 48 mpg! No decel popping thereafter and great response and super all around gas mileage for the years I had it. Wonderful advice from Doc.

Now, I have a 2014 SG. This one has Arlen Ness Big Sucker, Vance and Hines headpipes and mufflers. Purchased off the floor that way, brand new. Ran well, you could tell the 103" motor is better than the 96".

So, to remove the lean running of it, I bought a SEPRT, had it dynoed. Throttle response is very good. Decel popping is all but gone. Gas mileage is about 40 mpg combining city and freeway. Rear cylinder is hot, even on perfect 75 degree days.

My question is: Is that a good tune? I'm not convinced it is. (Had it done in Medina, Oh at Stinger formerly Century HD - they have a very good service dept.) Having it get lousier gas mileage than before tuning and while running it seems hotter on the rear cylinder than before? Is it because the 103" engine is higher flow and bigger than the 96 that I'm expecting more than I should? Tuner there claims he was trained at MMI by the guy who trained Doc.

Thanks for any replies!

No one at MMI trained me first off, mater of fact I wrote the Program for SE 1 (Engine Performance) and SE II (Dyno Operations) so whoever told this tuner that was lying. Second of all the tuner he used is the worse tuning software on the market.......get the TTS and an operator that knows how to use it.

A couple of replies - if stock SG is 76-77 hp as run by the guys at fuelmotousa, then a gain to 80 hp is weak. I think the problem is the SEPRT. Doc 1, that all of us know on the forum, is the supreme leader on dyno tuning. He says the TTS is so much better. Gains on all the 103's he's run are getting into the mid 80's - upper 80's in hp and in the low 100's in tq.
My fault for not looking into the TTS tuner better because many have recommended it on this forum.
As far as what gear it was pulled in, no idea. I will ask the dealer but quite frankly it is what it is $750 dollars later for the dyno tune and the SEPRT. We should expect more for our hard earned and spent money.

The SEPRT is not the problem. You're not that far off and as has been stated, it may just need a bit of timing to clean up the full throttle numbers. I can assure you that properly used, the SEPRT is more than adequate on a simple setup like yours. Is TTS better? Maybe slightly, but certainly not enough to spend extra money when you already own a capable tuner. You just need to find someone capable of using the device no matter which one is used.

How big is Todd? I've seen 10 TQ/5 HP difference between a 250# operator in the seat, feet on the footrests, fourth gear run, versus standing beside the bike, 6th gear run.

He is probably 5'9", 190 lbs. He seems to know his stuff. I just think that when you pay that kind of money for a dyno run you should first get a baseline printout, then the printout he gave me. Again, the gains seem modest even if this is just a stage 1 upgrade. Trying to find a great tuner is really difficult - evidence is just reading the threads on hdforums.

I want to wrap this thread up by thanking any who provide input. "Harley Tuner" and Doc will always be invaluable resources for the area of tuning. I need to put ego aside and realize that on stage 1 upgrades being in the 80-85 hp range and 95-100 in tq is reasonable to expect. Gas mileage is in 40-42 range and throttle response is great. Other than putting on those heat reflectors, I'm not sure what can be done about rear cylinder heat.
Next up, when I have $$ again, new shocks! That's a another thread!
