Hello,
So putting together a 2008 96 CID with 103 big bore kit, hi-flow filter, pipes. You know the drill. From my research it looks like dyno tune is a must. This is my first build of any significance. Once built, how crappy is it going to run when I start it up or until I get it tuned? I may want to get it dyno tuned in a shop a few hundred miles away. Is it a bad idea to ride it all that way?
Thanks.
Your guess is as good as ours. By theory you should be OK. Get into the theory that cruise the bike gingerly with a closed loop tune. The ECM should be able to take care of this. On the other hand. Sampling could be poor enough with EGR that the ECM richens the mixture and you are running rich enough to dilute the oil and wash rings. Yes, this is pretty worse case.
So, you need to make your own mind. Nobody else wants to take the liability of it.
My safest suggestion. Start the bike once. Long enough to see oil pressure and to make sure it isn't pouring oil. Trailer to dyno and let them break it in, and then tune it. Get bike back. Change oil, ride the thing, and enjoy.
