I pray they are not writing directly to the active lookup tables, but they probably are. The cycling of power probably just pulls the new values from the active memory in to the RAM.

Because they don't sell Race Tuners for them anymore. For $700 I can get a Thundermax ECU with wide band O2 sensors and autotuning. If I replaced with another Delphi ECM plus what the dealer will want for labor, programming, and a full tune with my modified engine I'll be out around $900-$1000, won't have wideband O2 sensors, won't have a tuner to adjust the MAP if I make any future changes, and no autotune. I could just get the ECM and go the PowerVision route, but to get the wideband and self tuning that would be the $450 from the dealership for the Delphi counting the labor for installing it, and another $750 for the PowerVision with Autotune for a total of $1200.

Even if they did sell the race tuners I'd be out around $850 for the ECM, labor, and tuner and still not have wideband O2 sensors or autotuning.

There are a dozen ways to armchair this issue.. IIRC Cole told me that the pre CAN ECUs are resource limited in both volatile and non volatile memory. The early Dephi systems are pretty crude from what I've seen. Heck now days cars are getting wireless modems and can get OS updates OTA...

it's happened to my '02 a few times while changing values with the SE race tuner. first time the bike battery ran low, second time the laptop battery went low. both times it had to go to dealer to reprogram ECU, it would say no VIN number associated with the ECU.

The CAN systems are pretty nice. The newer tuners with Bluetooth interfaces that can monitor while you ride through a smart phone, modify MAPs, and give suggested tuning changes are pretty sweet. Silicon has gotten so cheap. $5 for a 512 MB ARM chip can do a lot.

Well, dealership tried to flash the stock map, it didn't work, and it sounds like their programmer doesn't know how to do much past that.

If you can get a thundermax for 700.. Go for it. Much easier to tune.. Need 18mm bungs on the headpipes tho..

So the dealership called at 3 yesterday to tell me they couldn't get the ECM reprogrammed. I asked if they tried the two procedures in the 2007 ECM recovery notice of taking a test ECM through the communications verification steps and then switching to the bad ECM at the programming step and trying to wipe the memory to factory and using the new install procedure. They assured me they had. So I asked if they installed a new Delphi if they would guarantee that the SERT would still work. She assured me it would but said she would call the Harley tech line to verify before ordering the new ECM. Two hours later she called me again and said that when they called the tech line to verify the SERT would still work they gave them the procedure to wipe the memory and reprogram to factory stock and that worked. No new ECM for me! $67 New lesson is go in with questions and never assume they know what they are doing.
