It isn't gravel. Actually it is a very nice ride. Good pavement the entire way. A lot of it has recently been repaved. I never take 40 if I am going to Deland. Very light traffic as well.
Thanks for your answer. I will be coming from Gainesville area south through Ft.Mcoy heading back to the East coast. getting bored of 40 or 19.
If you have a little extra time on your trip I would highly suggest some of the roads between Gville and Ocala west of I75. Beautiful country. I could meet you in Gville and show you a few.
I think 42 is a nice ride. I think you'll like it. Actually has a curve or two and even some hills. IMO, the section west of Altoona is even better. Stay on 42 approximately 10 miles after crossing Rte 19 in Altoona. Go north on Rte 341A, which is also a nice 15-20 mile back road to Rte 40. Maybe hit Dan's Dam Diner for lunch. Take 40 west about 8 miles to Rte 315 up to Ft McCoy. Ride Safe!
