I agree HHP, interesting to see how all this plays out.

How ever it plays out above, I likely will see if I can have it collaborated before I do anything. Would hate to ruin the 2 table.

If a guy says he can refinish two tables in a day I would be highly suspicious of his methods.

Oh, can't say 100% he would have done it in 1 day. Maybe he did. Either way, I am not (sadly) going that route.

Thank you for all your help.

Not like Kel. He needs all the help he can get. You know, you gotta humor him or he hurts himself. I mean.

Can't catch me. Peeeeeeooooooowwwww...........

if there are no pits or deep scratches you can go over everything with some steel wool and apply a few coats of Toung oil, seen my dad breathe life into several types of wood with this method he was a cabinet maker- carpenter is whole life, gone for many years now though or I would ask him

I can understand that, much like the varied responses here, all of which are good information. That’s the trick, to find the way that will work best for you. Research sucks when you’re diving into areas unknown but it’s the only way to not pay. As noted, lots of good information here. I am sure you will be able to get the results you seek. Show the results when you do.

Before that use an old trick a gunsmith taught me decades ago,now keep in mind this must be done very carefully on veneers but on solid wood you can really get after it.
You need a damp rag and a steam iron and you need to keep the rag damp as you work it.
Set the rag on the damaged surface and press lightly with the steam iron using the steam ,keep the iron moving and don't let the rag dry out to avoid burning.
Work it for a minute or so and check it then do it again if need be, This will swell the wood raising the grain.
Again with veneers it can be tricky, too much and you'll loosen the veneer so only a little at a time carefully.
Once the grain is raised you can use sand paper ( nothing heavier than 120 to start with) and lightly sand with the direction of the grain and remove dents and some scratches of not too deep, progress with finer grits to finish. I also like oil finish and topped off with a liquid finishing wax using very fine steel wool.
You may have see the vintage stereo thread and what I did with a pretty rough Kenwood receiver case.
This is veneer so it was a long careful process but it came out pretty good for having been through 50 years of abuse.
