Since Mr. Nobama has decied to pull the plug on the Shuttel flights, the wife and I have decided to come down for the July 29 launch. After ahving looked at Hotels.com and Orbitz until blue in the face, I thought I'd ask the real experts, the Florida crew.
What hotel would you recommend, must be clean, close to launch site as possible and if on the water better. Or would you stay off water and if so, where would you go to view the launch? Wife wants to be as close as possible. Are the NASA causeway or visitors center tickets the place to be during launch?
We're not John D Rockeefeller types but don't want some flea bag hotel either. We'll be riding our 09 Ultra down.

Hate to burst your clouded political bubble, but it was Bush that declared the end of the shuttle program. Obama simply decided to let the plan stand.
Obama backs Bush's plan to retire shuttle in 2010

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama dashed the hopes of thousands of Kennedy Space Center workers Thursday when he agreed to continue a Bush plan to retire the space shuttle in 2010
ON a clear night, you can see the shuttle launch from hundreds of miles away. I am roughly 250 miles, and it is very clear from here. If you want to come to florida, anywhere around the Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach area should give you a great upclose view or just pick somewhere close.
Bub, there are lots of "mom & pop" type motels in the Cocoa Beach/Titusville/Melbourne area that are reasonably priced. If you don't get any recommendations from folks here that live in the area just Google Motels for those cities.
Thanks for the information on the area. We"ll probably try to do the visitors center and I'm thinking an air boat ride and then Dixie Cross Roads for seafood one night. I appreciate teh good information.
and for CHarley and your comment on my clouded political views. I'll just assume you wear the same jersey as the president so I have one question for you. How's that change thing working for you?
Thanks again for the replies. The information will be valuable as we plan our trip.
While this is a wonderful opportunity, launch windows and times are always subject to change and delays. Because of this, it is important to keep your plans flexible and monitor the launch status.

Sorry, but I don't "wear the jersey" of either the current or former. I just believe in giving credit where credit is due, and this economy the missing weapons of mass destruction, and the canceled shuttle program, were issues long before Jan 2009.

One thing to bear in mind - there is as good a chance as not that the launch will be delayed. Plan for a couple days (at least) after the projected launch just to make sure you don't miss it.
