It sucks until you get to Florida City. Depending on where in Miami your coming from, it might be better to head west to Old Cutler into Florida City and then US 1
i might be starting in kendall and heading south i'll probally be down there for a week or ten days just bouncing all over need to get out of ny and just ride.
It's a great ride after Florida City... Lots of little places along the way to stop and hang out. I actually like the ride better than when I get to Key West.
If you are in Kendall take SW 88th Street west to Krome Ave. (997). Take Krome south to US 1 in Florida City and stay on US 1 to Key West. On your way home pickup Card Sound Road at MM 106 in Key Largo, stop at Alabama Jack’s for lunch.
You might want to think about staying in Marathon, it’s 50 miles or so to Key West but you did come south to ride. You can get an OK motel for about half of what you will pay in Cayo Crazy. If you must spend time drinking too much in Key West you should still consider staying further up the Keys your last couple of days. Key West is not a good place to ride a bike, there is more per capita head trauma in Key West than any other city in the U.S.
Beware of speed traps on the Jew Fish Creek Bridge, the south side of Marathon and on the Bahia Honda Bridge; all are active more than 50% of the time.
Do not drink and drive, the cops are very serious about, “come on vacation, leave on probation.”
FYI, the photograph you see at the top of this is the Seven Mile Bridge just after sunrise. I took it from a helicopter a few years ago. In the 2 ž years I have had my Street Glide at least half of its 70,000 + miles were put on between Marathon and Key West. I still enjoy the ride.
