It is all related, and it is all a balancing act in order to get everything to play nicely.

This biggest consideration is buy the highest quality components you can afford, and an amplifier rated to the impedance of your speakers and with a much higher wattage rating than you think you need. Headroom is your friend, distortion is the killer!
Yep! Back in the day, just about all mobile speakers were 8 ohms... and THD was much higher than modern amps provide. I've heard amps that distorted so much you could barely tell what song was playing! But as amp and speaker technology has gotten better, many speakers now are 4 ohms... or even 2 ohms. And you're right... with that little impedance in the circuit, the amp needs to be able to provide enough low-distortion power to keep everything from burning up! An amp with a higher RMS power delivery rating for a given impedance is always a good thing... kind of like having a huge motor that doesn't have to work as hard to get the bike moving.

been married over 20 years. I am used to these types of rationalizations.
but dear, the the new washer and dryer were on sale and I saved 600 dollars. so the 600 dollars i just spent on more shoes was their money.. bwahahaha
will give my report as soon as i do the install.
can't wait
ride safe

Right now that would probably sound better than what I have. And all of the options and opinions and stuff make it very difficult to decide. I am going to go Dave's route, bite the bullet, and buy SOMETHING and tweak from there. I have a reasonable idea of what I want.

Although, hearing Ken's bike may have added a couple of twists to the equation. Ken, are those saddlebag speakers noticeable going down the road, or do they get lost in the ambient noise?

I am sold on the Rockford PBR300 3 channel amp. Now I need advice on a good set of speakers for the fairing and tour pak. Any advice? I have 2011 Ultra Classic. Rockford Fosgate PBR300X4 Punch BRT Ultra Compact 4 Channel Amplifier-300 Watt

Wade - the saddlebag speakers are amazing! They are waterproof, two-way 5 x 7 speakers, with little 1" tweeters suspended in a frame above the main speaker. They wrap me in what I like to call a "cocoon of sound". Even riding 80 MPH, the sound is all around me, and I can punch this system really LOUD and it still sounds good. The two 2" dome tweeters they put in the fairing, replacing the ambient air temp gauge and the fuel gauge (now relocated into the left chrome plug on the fuel tank) really enhance the sound as well.

This bike has two 4 1/2 " two-way speakers in the fairing, the two 2" dome tweeters in the fairing, the two big 6 1/2" speakers in the fairing lowers, and a two-way 5x7 in each saddlebag lid. Total of 8 speakers - four of which are two-way speakers.

I keep the front/rear fader at -2 to the rear, and the sound is perfectly balanced, and never gets drowned out by road noise. I ride with the volume at a max of about 60%... any more than that and it's just too loud. Riding this bike is like sitting in a concert hall going 80 MPH... a very powerful and balanced audio system.

Just make sure that amp can handle the enclosed area of the fairing. Some amps have over-heating problems. 3 channel. How many speakers do you plan on putting on?

Hey guys, I am working on my stereo system right now for my road glide. I am using two sets of C5-650 JL Audio Speakers and the Rockford PBR300.4 amp. My bike is in the shop getting raked right now but while the fairing is off I brought it home and mounted all the speakers and stuff and started wiring it. I am in Coconut Creek so if anyone wants to hear it we could meet up soon.

Also just an idea maybe you guys should give some thought to. I am running an Alpine head unit. I sold my stock radio on ebay for $450, bought the new radio for $299, and $200 for the BT install kit. Basically I paid 50 bucks for a new aftermarket radio, that will have much better sound control, has RCA outputs, and has built in ipod control. You guys might want to consider this option before spending a couple hundred bucks on ipod integrators for your factory unit
