Question Batteries

How long do the batteries last....

Bike, Key Fob, LoJack Fob.

I've had the bike since January of 2010, just over 4,000 miles on it. Never replaced any batteries yet and don't want to find out I need a battery when I'm nowhere near civilization. Might just about be time to do the 5,000 mile service. Perhaps even a little early if it's a good idea.

I have an 07' Softail with 34k on it and I have changed them one time if that helps. Don't really remember when. Just get a spare set and keep them in your bags somewhere.
Welcome to the Florida crew by the way.

From 2001 to 2007 my bike went through 3 batteries. In 2007, when I installed the 4th battery, I also bought a battery tender and plug it in every time I park the bike. So, coming up on five years on my current battery.

A friend of mine has a 2004 Dyna that's on it's original battery. And, his ladies' 2002 Fat Boy is on it's original battery. However, he has battery tenders for everything he owns and plugs them in religiously every time that vehicle gets parked.

However, I'm sure there will be a lot of folks who will tell you that battery tenders are a waste of money or that you don't need to plug the bike in every time you park it.

Keep both the bikes on a battery tender all the time. Replace the FOB battery and my Sunpass battery annually.

The battery in the lock remote on my old car lasted 13 years. They just don't last.

Number one way to keep the battery in your bike from dying early is to ride your bike. If that is not possible use a tender. I put Teri's on the tender if it is going to get real cold but mine gets ridden every day so it lasts. According to my friend that works at the dealer they say to replace your FOB battery every year just to be safe. If you bought your bike at Space Coast Harley they already put the battery tender plug on your bike they install them on every new bike they sell.
Since we are almost neighbors we need to hook up and ride on of these days.

FOB battery every year is cheap insurance. I am sure they last longer than that...but practice starting your bike 'without', just in case.
If you happen to have an oil temp dip stick, that has the same battery as the FOB...so you can swap out, just in case.
When you change out your FOB battery, throw the old one in your saddle bag for the next SOB that needs a battery for their FOB.

thanks for the feedback guys. LoJack told me to change out the battery annually too, but I haven't changed anything yet and we're just about at 2 years (about a week away).

I do use a tender, not all the time however. I typically put the bike on the tender if it is going to sit for about a week or more without being ridden.

I just carry an extra fob battery in the saddlebag. I just replaced the original battery on my bike, 07 model with 131,000+ on it.

The bikes battery will typically last about 5 years... per my experience. They do say to replace the FOB battery every year, but I do like Sefferdog and just keep a spare in my saddle bag for the day it goes out on me. It also is a good idea to learn how to code in through your blinker switches for emergencies. Or just print those instructions from your manual and leave them in the saddle bag, or wallet, as well.
