Whatever route you choose enjoy the ride. SoFlo is no mecca for riding, but it is what you make of it.
We have went to Key West two of the last three years and we are going again this year. Last year we unloaded the bike at Ocala. We had friends in Ft. Myers. After a few days there they joined us and we spent three days in Key West. We stayed at The Harbor Inn. It is a nice smaller place. It included breakfast and happy hour. It is a great location. It's about two blocks to Duval St. We really enjoy the ride out on the keys. Hutch
I lived in Fort Lauderdale for20+ years before moving to Maui three years ago. Riding to Key west, stop at Alabama Jacks on Card Sound Road, Key Largo. The worst thing would be to find yourself behind an older couple in an RV going 30MPH and no way around them due to oncoming traffic. US RTE 1 is two lanes - one northbound and one southbound with passing areas every so often. Enjoy the ride and once again, watch out for The RVs and pick-up trucks.

That first section from Homestead to Key Largo, they have made some improvements, the passing zones, are closer together so you can at least get around them. But you might as well just relax and take in the scenery. As soon as you pass one RV or Car going 35-40 their will just be more in line. Or course if you go out to Card Sound you will miss that section of highway. The road will open up to 4 lanes in a lot of areas, watch your speed. Those little towns make a living on folks not running the speed limit.
Best places to pass are on the bridges... Long and straight. But be careful of morons coming from the opposite direction. I had one idiot trying to pass six cars... She made it past 3 before she realized she was heading right for me. Fortunately one of the cars she was passing saw this too and made room for her to get in.
My girlfriend later remarked that she saw the look of terror on the woman's face. Yet never put down the cell phone.
Also commented on how calm I was.... I straddled the breakdown lane to give her more room and and calmly gave her the finger as she went by.
