I never served it the military but I do stand when a Flag is paraded by and as a high school teacher I insist that my class stand up when the pledge is recited every morning. I do this to remind my students how good they have it in the good old "US of A". I am always amazed at the start of a year how many students do not recite the pledge. I am very happy to report that by the end of the year, nearly every student is saying the pledge and I see much more respect then the start of the year!
Thanks to everyone that reads this that served in the military. I appreciate what you have done for our country.
ex Air Force here. I haven't stood for the national Anthem since some hippies threw **** at me at SF airport in '67 I onlyspent some time in Goose Bay, Labrador . If I had served in Iraq I'd be a freakin' hero. Those guys over there are doing the same thing my brothers who served in Nam did and they were branded as baby killers. Besides if the National Anthem were to be America the Beautiful by Ray Charles, I'd stand.
So that's the answer, the hippies win huh! Pretty WEAK in my opinion! I bet your Brothers who served in NAM - the ones doing the fighting - still stand and show respect for THEIR Flag and THEIR Country! Whether you are aware of it or not, some of us Iraq Veterans have been disrespected, spit on, had tires slashed and cars keyed due to our Service. Do you think the D'Bags that do this to us think that we are Heroes? The reason we get the respect that we do is because VIETNAM VETS stood up and said NEVER AGAIN-NEVER AGAIN WILL OUR NATIONS WARRIORS BE TREATED THE WAY WE WERE!!! Fact is - Vietnam Vets ARE HEROES - but vets like you do a disservice to ALL Veterans!
Pablo, thank you for your service! I still get chills up and down my spine when I hear our National Anthem. I will go to my grave believing that we have made a difference because we stood up and said "NEVER AGAIN-NEVER AGAIN WILL OUR NATIONS WARRIORS BE TREATED THE WAY WE WERE!!!
Great post. Peacetime Jarhead here with a family full of Jarheads, Grunts, Squids and Flyboys (had a nephew who was gonna be a Puddle Jumper, but ended up a Grunt in Afghanistan). I better get in shape if there is all that asskickin' to do, though!

I like this post. In high school particularly students could care less and are in the stages of rebellion and anti anything (trust me, that was me) including not standing for the Pledge which I witnessed many times in high school. Although I get angry when people do not respect the flag or Anthem, not only because of my past and current service ,try to do that in another country and people will not be so forgiven. Most of us just attempt to educate someone on the importance of standing and why we show respect.
The past Veterans that have fought, my hat goes to you. And to the high school teacher, hats off to you for showing the students on what the right thing to do is, whether or not you served.

just my opinion. not my fault that wasn't there my orders were changed and i froze my *** off for 18 months., didn't know that you iraq vets have been treated badly other than the deplorable conditions at walter reed. i'm not getting into a flame war, just agree to disagree...and the brothers i mentioned were my siblings, one killed in Hue during Tet. My Dad was killed in the Philippines when I was 6 months old. Just because I don't stand for a piece of cloth and an old British pub song which does nothing to extol the virtues of this country doesn't make me a bad guy. Ever go to the Veterans Day parade in NY? Sad....Only 100 people showed up. I think last year's was cancelled due to indifference. I honour them in my own way

Thank YOU for what you do. In todays world it seems like the kids just don't have a clue anymore. This country needs more teachers like you. You ARE serving your country by teaching the kids about respecting the flag and what it stands for. Just as important as defending the same. Again, thank you.
