The reason we get the respect that we do is because VIETNAM VETS stood up and said NEVER AGAIN-NEVER AGAIN WILL OUR NATIONS WARRIORS BE TREATED THE WAY WE WERE!!! Fact is - Vietnam Vets ARE HEROES
Thanks for those kind words....
Many of us were treated pretty badly after spending a year, or two, or three over in "The 'Nam", and I'd hate to see any current Vet's receive that same treatment when returning home...
Most of you are right, people of my generation are indifferent to the flag and what it stands for. i know when i got back in to Baltimore after my tour in Iraq and i saw that huge American flag in the airport it brought tears to my eyes and i feel blessed to be home every day enjoying my freedom. some people who disrespect the flag just have no idea what it means to be free or how good we have it in this country. my advice to them is go to a third world country where the people are oppressed. maybe that would change their minds. im an airmen who was deployed with grunts and i tell you what the comradery was unreal during my time over there. my hats off to all vets and all vets who have been thru real combat. god bless
just my opinion. not my fault that wasn't there my orders were changed and i froze my *** off for 18 months., didn't know that you iraq vets have been treated badly other than the deplorable conditions at walter reed. i'm not getting into a flame war, just agree to disagree...and the brothers i mentioned were my siblings, one killed in Hue during Tet. My Dad was killed in the Philippines when I was 6 months old. Just because I don't stand for a piece of cloth and an old British pub song which does nothing to extol the virtues of this country doesn't make me a bad guy. Ever go to the Veterans Day parade in NY? Sad....Only 100 people showed up. I think last year's was cancelled due to indifference. I honour them in my own way
Pablo22 - Thanks for what you've said and personally speaking, I need to pass some back too. I came home on emergency leave twice and ran into some M/F'n "Fondaites" both times. Now I'm able to confess that it took a lot of years for me to sprout a VN Vet patch and these days, you younger Vets are positively proving why guys like me can be proud again. My thanks go to y'all.

A piece of cloth and an old British Pub Song? A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything - that doesn't apply to you cause you're not much of a man. New York honors the almighty dollar, why would they show up to honor the Nations Veterans When our own Veterans - more specifically, the ones like YOU - don't have any respect for the Flag, or their own fellow Veterans? How in the World can you expect the general public to? We take care of our own!

Outstanding post, IMHO the only person a vet is really looking for respect from is another vet. Whenever I am stopped in uniform and thanked for my service I never know what to say. In general I thank them for coming up and thanking me. I love what I do, enjoy the people I work with and really wouldn't want to do much of anything else.
Coming through Atlanta airport last year the crowd in the food court area got to it's feet and applauded as a large group of soldiers walked in out of their gate after flying into the country. It was deplorable that any other vet of any other era was treated any other way. There is a picture of one of my jarhead uncles standing in Logan airport coming back on leave. He's standing in front of a simple paper sign my family hung up for him looking uncomfortably to one side as if he's expecting someone to do something completely inappropriate because he dared to be out in public in uniform.
I'll never deny someone their freedom of speech but spitting and maliciousness is NOT covered under the first article.

That's uncalled for. Whether you agree with his opinion or not, the man is a veteran. He earned the right to honor veterans any way he chooses. Not withstanding his own sacrifices for our country, the beauty of our nation is that we can be free to celebrate our nation in whatever manner fits us.
As a Marine you fight to defend equally his right to stand during the national anthem or sit during the national anthem. I stand during the national anthem, remove my hat and sing out loud because that's how I choose to honor my country.
