I just joined my local HOG chapter without knowing anything about anything. I had only been in Boston for two years and I have to say that it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I have absolutely nothing good to say about Bostonians, but I'm gonna miss the hell out of the Boston HOG chapter when I leave!
I'm a young twerp and I was looking to learn everything I could from these older, experienced riders. They seemed to really appreciate that attitude and accepted me as one of their own right away. Great advice and good fun *don't know what more to even ask for!
As to the original question: I'm told that not all local chapters are created equally. I lucked out and found one with great rides, both big and small, so I'd suggest you approach and ask if you can join them on a couple to get a feel for the group.
